4x1600

10/26/2010-This is a workout I got from my college coach. It is a very high intensity workout. It is a workout that I feel can give a team a lot of confidence. We had a lot of improvement in our times from last year to this year.

This past weekend the Bulldog Harriers competed at Southwestern's NAIA Mid-State Classic. This meet is known for its fast course and great competition. We had a lot of Personal Record's and Seasons Bests but we still have a lot to give.

In the ladies race, Erin Loeffler had a big performance and ran a PR of 20:17 which puts her 7th all time on the McPherson list. On the day the ladies had 4 out of 6 season best. We are looking forward to the end of the year and running on a fast course in Salina.

Tempo run at "the Dr office"

It is amazing how far we have come this season. Yesterday we did another Tempo run and we are finaly starting to look smooth and under control during these efforts. Our paces seem to be evening out quite a bit as well. It will be nice as the program grows and we have people who have been here for 2, 3, 4 years who can teach the new athletes how the workouts are supposed to go.

start of tempo run on Maxwell

Yesterday we divided the group into two. First group was 20 min tempo group two was 35 min Marathon pace. Both groups looked good. I am excited to see what we can do this weekend at Southwestern.

mixed reps

across the lake on a perfect day at Lakeside Park

We did a mixed rep workout today and the group nailed it. I was very pleased with how we looked. We executed on all of the points I brought up during the meeting about what we need to work on during the race. This was probably the most confusing workout I have ever written in that the distances and paces jumped all over the place throughout the workout. The kids handled it very well. We only had one slight goof on one of the rest periods which was not a big deal. We need to keep on this path things are looking very good for the next two meets. our next workout will be in Salina on the KCAC Championship course.

polka dots

We have started a new tradition for the track program. Anyone that qualifies for a National Championship meet will get a white jersey with red dots, if you are an All-American you receive a red jersey with white dots, and finally if you are a National Champion you get a black jersey with red and white dots. Everyone will wear red bottoms with white dots.

We recived all of our polka dot gear last week. The kids were very excited and they are looking forward to competing in them.

Lakeside shootout

We hosted the first annual Lakeside Shootout this past weekend and it was a successful event.

We had a great crowd out to cheer the athletes on. The feed back on the course was very positive. spectators like how easy it was to view everything.

Payton and Kelsi in chase pack.

The womens race was first with Karissa Cominator of Friends going stright to the lead which she kept the whole race. Freshman Kelsi Beam (McPherson, Kan.) was McPherson’s top finisher with a time of 20:15 to finish sixth overall, while fellow freshman Payton Hartman (Smithville, Mo.) completed the race in eighth position with a time of 20:23. Hartman’s time matches her season-best from Oklahoma State. The Bulldog women finished in third place behind KCAC rival Friends University and Fort Hays State University. McPherson had four runner finish in the top 25, including Erin Loeffler (North Newton, Kan.) (21:01) in 14th and Ashley Huizar (La Puente, Calif.) (21:59) 23rd place. Sophomore Torey Fry (Wichita, Kan.) finished just outside of the top 40 with a time of 25:04. Overall the women competed very well and took a good step forward toward the conference meet. We still have some things that we need to work on, but we have time.

Bulldog junior Javier Ceja (Pico Rivera, Calif.) won his first individual title in a McPherson jersey with a time 25:55.30. Ceja previously won the individual crown as an unattached athlete at the J.K. Gold Classic hosted by Wichita State University. Ceja shaved approximately nine seconds of his previous season-best of 26:04. Overall for the men, Ceja led McPherson to a team score of 31 points, eight points better than second place Fort Hays State University. McPherson’s four other runners finished in the top 20, with freshman Morgan Peterson (McPherson, Kan.) (28:06 PR) finishing 10th, David Parry (Morganville, Kan.) (28:24 PR) coming in 11th, Mike Baxter (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) (28:51) placing 17th and Kyle Smith (Junction City, Kan.) (29:12) finished 20th. Like the ladies the guys competed much better and were battling with people from other schools. The guys made a nice statement and have lots of positives to take from the meet. It is always good to get a win as a team and as an individual.

The major glitch of the whole meet was the course ended up being long. When I initially measured the course it was short by about 30 meters, we then remeasured and it was right on 2000 meters. So we started to paint and put posts up over the next few days. Somewhere in the mist of all of that the course became about 20 meters per lap long. This is something that can be easily fixed. We hope to grow this meet into a quality event, and potentially bring in some more ranked teams. We have some work to do between now and then.

All in all I was pleased with how things went and we will plan on hosting the KCAC Championships there next year.

Tabor

The Bulldogs had a group of athletes compete at the Tabor Invite this past weekend. Leading the way for the men was Josh Nilles at 31:30.68 good for 64th place. Josh was followed by Freshman Derek Kruger (34:49.45, 93rd), Senior Matt Brown (35:57.74, 98th) and Jason Pfoutz (40:37.70, 106th).

On the ladies side Torey Fry ran for the first time since indoor season running a time of 28:31.88 for 91st place.

Torey and Sabrina Lee post race

The team will be back together on Oct 9th for the Lakeside Shootout.

Men's Results

Stillwater, Okla. – The McPherson College men’s cross country team finished 11th of 23 teams, while the women took 14th of 30 in the College Division of the annual Oklahoma State University Cowboy Jamboree Saturday morning in Stillwater, Okla.
Junior Javier Ceja set a season-best with a time of 26:04.08 and a fifth place finish to lead the Bulldogs. Ceja was the highest finishing NAIA runner. Edward Limo of Colby Community College was the top finisher with a time of 25:15.49.
Sophomore Kyle Smith (28:07.24) and freshman Morgan Peterson (28:09.96) were the next two Bulldogs to cross the finish line. The duo finished 64th and 65th respectively. Junior David Parry (29:06.51 PR), sophomore Mike Baxter (29:12.27), freshman Juan Jimenez (29:45.87) and freshman Preston Mossman (30:57.76) rounded out the scoring for McPherson. The Bulldogs tallied 319 points en route to the 11th place finish.

Javier Ceja

On the women’s side, freshman Kelsi Beam and Payton Hartman lead the Bulldogs for the second straight race. Beam ended the race at 20:09.12, good for 32nd place and the 6th fastest time in McPherson College history, while Hartman took 42nd position with at time of 20:23.17 putting her 7th on the all time list. The duo was followed by Erin Loeffler in 77th place, with a time of 21:06.13 good for 10th all time, Ashley Huizar (103rd, 21:49.68), Sonia Fuentes (132nd, 22:46.19) and Ashley Martinez (158th, 24:24.59).

Florence Ngetich of El Paso Community College won the event with a time of 17:55.43, while Amy Pierson of Southwestern College was the top NAIA finisher at 18:28.72.

I thought that the ladies ran well. We still have to close our gap down and have some people move up if we are looking to contend for top 3 at conference. I am please with how things are going as a whole right now. The men looked a little more rusty than the women. We have a very young team and a lot of them were running their first ever 8k. Add in that OSU is not an easy course it leaves us with some room for improvement. I am still happy with how things are progressing as we need to be running fast in November not the end of September.

Next up is the Lakeside Shoot out at Lakeside Park in McPherson. It is shaping up to be a competitive meet with several KCAC schools and Community Colleges coming. As of right now we are expecting 12 teams.

Building towards something great

We are currently in a period where we are taking two weeks off of racing. But it is anything but down time for the team. Cross Country has upped their miles (Ceja, Sorenson, Ashley H, Payton on the leader boards) last week and this week. We have progressively been getting better at all of "the little things" which is very exciting to watch their progression. It is amazing the jumps this group has made in a months time. We just need to stay the course and keep working hard. I am very excited to see what the group can do at Oklahoma State and Tabor next Saturday. In the mean time we have some tough workouts and lots of miles to cover. Things are on track for a very exciting November for the Bulldogs.

NAIA posted the new conference polls this morning. The Bulldog women maintained their 4th place ranking which can be found here, http://naia.cstv.com/sports/w-xc/spec-rel/091310aab.html. The men moved up a spot from 3rd to second, their rankings can be found here http://naia.cstv.com/sports/m-xc/spec-rel/091310aac.html.

Track has started conditioning. We have 25 track only kids who are working out this fall. They are a great group and have been working very hard. We now have more fall track athletes than we had athletes when I arrived at McPherson. This speaks volumes to the work that Coach Becker put in this past year.

JK Gold Recap

This past weekend the Bulldogs race at RAFT golf course in Augusta Kansas, for the JK Gold Cross Country Invitational. The Women ran a 4k and the Men ran a 6k. I really like going to this meet because of the shorter distances. It gives the freshman a chance to ease into college racing with a shorter effort and it also gives the upperclassman a chance to get used to racing on the grass again.

Overall I was very pleased with the meet and how the Bulldogs performed. We had 4 out of 7 women and 8 out of 15 men run as fast as or faster than their projected times from our time trial during camp. With the amount of work they put in the past few weeks I know their legs were heavy. So the fact that we were able to run as well as we did is very exciting and bodes well for the future.

The team continues to impress me. They have been looking better in workouts from the weight room to hills sprints and each week has a small but noticeable improvement in form and efficiency. The team is headed down a very good path

Kelsi Beam once again led the team with her 28th place finish with a time of 15:32. She was followed by Payton Hartman (15:48) 36th, Ashley Huizar (16:14) 49th, Erin Lueffler (16:33) 55th, Ashley Martinez (18:17) 85th, Sonia Fuentes (18:50) 96th and running unattached was Lizette Guzman (19:13) 97th. Both Beam and Hartman ran PRs for 4k. Overall the women placed 4th in the College Division with 114 points. Conference rival Southwestern was 3rd with 88 points.

Season Recap

NAIA Nationals

Marion, Ind. – The McPherson College track and field team had two athletes competing in day one of the three-day NAIA Outdoor track and field National Championships. Sophomore Javier Ceja finished 15th in the men’s 10,000-meters, while sophomore David Parry earned a spot in the second preliminary round of the 800-meter dash.

Ceja had a strong performance in his first of two events at the national meet, as the California native finished 15th of 33 runners with a time of 32.23.60. Ceja’s finish was the best amongst the KCAC competitors as he beat out Dan Neidlinger and Matt Ditzler of Friends University. The champion at the men’s 10,000-meters, freshman Kennedy Kithuka of Wayland Baptist University, crossed the finish line with a time of 29:31.99.

Sophomore David Parry continues his Cinderella season as he propelled himself into the second round of preliminaries races with a 1:54.64 in the men’s 800-meters. Parry was 15th of 18 competitors that advance to the next round. Parry’s 1:54.64 is his second fastest time of the season. Oklahoma Christian University sophomore Silas Kisorio posted the top qualifying time with a 1:51.53.

McPherson senior Antowine Lamb ended day two of the 2010 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on a high note for the Bulldogs as he captured the title in the men’s high jump. Lamb, who won the KCAC championship just a few weeks ago, took top honors with a personal record and school record jump of 2.11m (6’-11”).

Take this link to watch Lamb capture the NAIA National Championship in the high jump. http://www2.indwes.edu/naia/event-recordings-may-28.htm

The Topeka, Kan., native started the meet with an easy clearance of 1.96m (6'-5"), before two second attempt makes at 2.01m (6'-7") and 2.06m (6'-9"). With the field narrowed from 22 to six following the 2.06m height, Lamb reeled off a first attempt clearance at the 2.11m mark. He was only one competitor to clear the height on his first attempt and only one of three to cross the bar.

Lamb, along with the other two athletes left in the field, failed in all three attempts at 2.16m. Lamb was awarded the title, because of his clearance on the first attempt. With the win, he becomes the only the second national champion in McPherson College history. The previous champion was Ron Anderson in the men’s discus in 1957.

Three other Bulldogs competed on Friday, including junior Andrea Swanson, sophomore David Parry and sophomore Javier Ceja. Swanson, the only representative from the women’s team, finished 14th in the women’s shot put with a mark of 13.51m (44’-6.25”). The mark is her second best throw of the season.

Parry, who yesterday advanced to the second round of preliminaries, failed to advance to the finals, but had a good showing with a 18th place finish and a time of 1:56.82 in the 800-meters, while Ceja finished 21st in the men’s 5,000-meters preliminaries with a time of 15:27.10.

One day following his championship in the men’s high jump, senior Antowine Lamb was named to the NAIA All-American team. Junior Mitch Krier was the only Bulldog to compete in day three of the national meet held at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind.

Lamb’s selection to the NAIA All-American team marks the first in his career and adds another individual to a successful year in McPherson College athletics.

Krier, a junior from Colorado, competed Saturday in the men’s pole vault, but failed to place in the event. After passing on the first two heights, 4.70m (15’-5”) and 4.85m (15’-11”), he knocked the bar on his three attempts at 5.00m (16’-4.75”). A clearance at 5.00m would have placed Krier within the top four. Freshman Stefanos Koufidis of Culver-Stockton College successfully defended his NAIA Indoor Championship with the outdoor title. He was the lone athlete to clear the 5.15m (16’-10.75”) mark.

As a team the McPherson men finished 31st of 68 school, but did not place on the women’s side. The women’s team champions, Azusa Pacific University scored 61 points, while men’s champion Wayland Baptist University tallied 70 points.

California Trip

Emporia

Emporia, Kan. – Sophomore David Parry qualified for the NAIA National Outdoor Track Meet for the first time in his career, as seven members of the McPherson College track and field team competed at the Emporia State University Sam Williams Qualifier on Saturday.

Entering the day, Parry’s personal record (1:57.16) in the 800-meters was just seconds off the NAIA National ‘B’ Standard qualifying mark. The Morganville, Kan., native ran his best race of the season with a third place finish, but more importantly he shaved three seconds off his previous record to qualify for the NAIA National Outdoor Track Meet with a 1:54.06 finish. This marks Parry’s first career qualification for the national meet.

Fellow sophomore Javier Ceja bettered his national qualifying status in the men’s 5,000-meters with a 14:51.79, his fastest time of the season. Ceja will compete nationally in both the 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters.

Twister Twilight

KCAC

Ottawa, Kan. – The Bulldogs tallied four individual victories and three runner-up finishes as the McPherson College track team finished eighth in the women’s competition and fifth on the men’s side at the annual KCAC Conference Championships. This year’s meet was held at the Bill “Bo” Boucek Track on the campus of Ottawa University.

Andrea Swason, Javier Ceja, Antowine Lamb and Mitchell Krier all claim individual KCAC Championships, while Rachel Leuthold, Swanson and Garrett Sharp finished second in their respective events.

Junior thrower Andrea Swanson opened Saturday’s competition with McPherson’s first KCAC Championship in the women’s shot put since Stacy Miles won the event in 1977. Swanson, a junior from Littleton, Colo., broke her own school record, 13.56m (44’-6”), with a mark of 13.78m (45’-2.5”).

Just hours later, Swanson would impress for the second time of the day in the women’s hammer throw with a second place finish. She solidified her spot in McPherson track history with a school record mark of 44.50m (146’-0”).

Teammate Rachel Leuthold also finished in runner-up position in the women’s pole vault. In just her second meet of the season, Leuthold vaulted 2.97m (9’-9”). Her clearance tied the winning height, but was on her second attempt to give her second place in the event.

Other notables from the women’s competition include, freshman Sonia Fuentes finishing with a season best time of 14.74 seconds in the 100-meters and sophomore Krissa Fuentes setting a season best of 32.75m (107’-5”) in the discus.

McPherson College sophomore Javier Ceja continued to impress in the men’s competition. Ceja opened Saturday with a fifth place finish in the 1,500-meters, crossing the line at 4:00.61 before winning the men’s 5,000-meters. His winning time of 15:03.62 is the fastest at the KCAC Championships since Elliott Rodda (Southwestern College) in 1988. Ceja also became the first McPherson College male to win the event since Dave Burgess in 1978.

Junior pole-vaulter Mitch Krier won his first KCAC Championship as a Bulldog with a vault of 4.73m (15’-6.25”). Krier’s mark was two feet higher than the second place finisher, as he became the first Bulldog to win the event since Mike Butsch in 1971.

Senior Antowine Lamb and teammate Garrett Sharp swept the top two spots in the men’s high jump, as Lamb defended his 2009 KCAC Championship with a height of 2.03m (6’-8”) to claim the 2010 crown. Sharp followed Lamb’s lead with a clearance of 1.93m (6’-4”) for second place.

Other notables from the men’s championship included, David Parry finishing with a season best and personal record of 1:57.16 in the 800-meters, while setting a season best in the 1,500-meters (4:05.23; 7th).

Bulldog freshman Kyle Smith set a season best in the 3,000-meters steeplechase, placing fourth with a time of 10:41.87. Junior Rattanck Mour rounds out the Bulldog notables with an eighth place finish in the 100-meters. His time was 11.28.

North Newton, Kan. – The McPherson track and field team battled through cloudy, windy conditions on Saturday at the Bethel Invitational held at Thresher Stadium in North Newton, Kan. The Bulldogs set two school records on Saturday, with junior Andrea Swanson in the hammer throw and junior Mitch Krier in the pole vault.

Swanson, the only Bulldog competing for the women’s team, opened her day with a fifth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 12.69m (41’-7.75”). But her day was highlighted by her impressive school record breaking distance of 43.83m (143’-9”) in the hammer. Prior to Saturday, Swanson’s best was a 40.58m (133’-2”) earlier this season at the ACCK Championships. Her throw was good for fifth place in the competition.

On the men’s side, Krier was the lone Bulldog to win on Saturday. Krier vaulted a season best and school record 4.85m (15’-11”) in just his second meet of the season. More importantly, Krier’s vault bettered his National Qualifying ‘B’ Standard mark of 4.72m (14’-0”) to National Qualifying ‘A’ Standard position.

In other field events, freshman Garrett Sharp cleared 1.91m (6’-3.25”) in the high jump, while freshman Grant Miller threw 10.39m (34’-1.25”) in the shot put.

The McPherson men’s track team continued to improve on the season marks, as the Bulldog tracksters set six season bests. Junior Anthony Leal led the team with an 8th place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.57. Leal’s time was nearly two seconds faster than his previous season best.

Big weekend for the Bulldogs

With 30 days to go till the big KCAC meet, this weekend is a big weekend for the cross program. We are hosting our home meet, the Brooks Open at McPherson Country Club. Women's race goes off at 10:15 and men will race at 11:00. This meet will be a great test as we will see some teams we have yet to see so far this year, including a few conference schools.

There will be three top guy recruits on campus. Ruben Martinez makes a return to campus and he is bringing Javier Ceja who is also from LA, California with him. Joining those two on Saturday night will be Morgan Peterson from McPherson. A lot will be going on the next few days in McPherson, it is an great time to be a Bulldog

Marathon Pace workout

number 4-5 with coach Jilka on the way out.

On Tuesday we hit up the dirt roads for a marathon pace workouts. It has been great to see the progression of the athletes from week to week. We went further than we ever had for this run and looked controlled doing it. I am continually excited to see the progression and just thinking about what the future will bring for us.

Top 3 on way back

We are very fortunate to have these dirt roads within 1.5 miles of our track. Its perfect warmup/cooldown distance for us. Each block is a mile and the crop fields and tree lines mark the half mile, so we are able to get splits. We do all of our long runs out on the dirt roads and any tempo work. It is great having a marked out area with soft surfaces.

OSU Jamboree

We loaded up the Bus at 3:00 pm to head down to Stillwater. We had about a 3 hour ride and it went by quick. We arrived at the course with perfect weather outside.

We walked the back part of the course with the steps and hills. I really liked the course, thought it had a nice mix of hills, trails, grass, and wood chips. After a quick tour of the course we loaded back up on the bus and went to a Pasta dinner put on by the Stillwater HS team. They had good food and all proceeds went toward their program. Something we will do for years to come if they continue to put this event on.

Team after pasta dinner

Next it was off the hotel. Not the best hotel I have ever stayed in but we were only 15 min away from the course. Most of the evening was spent relaxing at the hotel due to an early morning the next day.

The team was up at 4 am for a shakeout run and Pancakes in the lobby. We loaded up the bus at 6 am to head over to the course. It was still dark out when we arrived on sight, but with the girls racing at 8:00 am i wanted to make sure we were there and they did not feel rushed getting ready for the race.

Course at 6:15 am

We had the a series of unfortunate events happen to our girls team this week. We had two freshman, Torey Fry and Paula Carpenter who were banged up to the point where they could have raced but I didn't want to risk setting them back for the upcoming weeks so we held both of them out. Kati Beam was in the school play and had to miss the meet and another girl who got sick on race day. So with our lack of depth to start with, all said and done we were only able to put 3 girls on the start line this weekend. The good part was the three girls ran well. Brittany Delker was our number 1 with 21:20 only 2 seconds off her PR, Katie Logan was our number 2 with a time of 21:42 almost a minute faster than Missouri Southern, and her time from last year and only 10 seconds off her PR.

Top Dog of the week Katie Logan finishing in a season best

Krissa Fuentes was our number 3 with a time of 24:47 which was faster than her Missouri Southern time 3 seconds off her PR and almost a minute faster than her time from 2008. So for all of the unfortunate events leading up to the race the ladies raced very well.

Men's Race start

Next up was the guys. The guys ran a good race but I am still waiting for all of our top 5 to put together a good race. We have had two solid weeks of training and workouts leading up to this meet. Shaun Griffin (the birthday boy) had a great race. Running 27:28 which was 59 seconds faster than his time from 2008. He was followed by Kyle Smith who had another solid performance running 27:48. Next in was Mike Baxter running 27:59, then Matt Brown who ran a seasons best on the tough course running 31:21 over 2 min faster than his time from 2008, and finishing up the scoring for the Bulldogs was David Parry with a time of 32:07. Dan Meibuam showed great improvement over his race at WSU running a 33:15 which is almost 6 min faster than his projected time from the Shockers race. Zach Dowling was the 7th man running 34:18 which was over a minute and half faster than his time from 2008. Fred Miller (39:05) and Ben Denton (44:49) also has solid performances for the Bulldogs. The men's team average time for the top 5 was 10 seconds faster this year over the 2008 team, so they are showing improvement across the board.

While at the meet I also had a chance to talk to one of our top girl recruits for next year Kylie Bourquin from Follett HS. We had a nice chat and she is excited to come for our overnight visit weekend.

Waiting for the Bus

All in all another good weekend. Next up is the McPherson Brooks Open. It will be a good smaller meet for us. We will get a chance to match up against some other conference schools that we have not seen yet, I am excited to see what we can do.
